Asylum – Removal: Nexus to a Protected Ground

Pineda-Maldonado v. Garland, No. 20-1912 (1st Cir. Jan. 24, 2024).

Ricardo Jose Pineda-Maldonado, a native of El Salvador, sought asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture (CAT) after entering the U.S. without inspection. His father was murdered by cattle thieves over a gambling debt, and subsequently, Pineda-Maldonado received death threats from these individuals' demanding payment of his father’s debt.
